I am from Singapore and I am depressed by the terrible food that you find in the so-called "Malaysian restaurants" in NYC. New Yorkers do not seem to even know what real Malay food (or Indian food for that matter) is like. These Chinese "Malaysian restaurants" would not be able to stay in business for one month in Singapore but they are top rated here, recommended in food columns and on Chowhound
One example of how fake these places are is the fact that some serve pork dishes! Pork in a Malay restaurant?! It is like serving pork in a Kosher restaurant. I LOVE LOVE LOVE good authentic Chinese food but the Chinese (Malaysians) in NY do not know how to make even passable Malay food. Sorry.
Does anyone know of a real authentic Malay restaurant with ethnic (Moslem) Malay cooks in NYC????
