Rani Indian Bistro - what a nice surprise

TanQ10 | Dec 12, 2004 10:25 PM

I just visited Rani for the first time, since their transformation from Bombay Bistro. Are these the same folks cooking? Wow. The pakoras were light and fluffy and when i bit into them was pleasantly surprised to taste potatoes, cauliflower bits and some crunchy cabbage. The samosas wafter off a heavenly jeera (cumin) scent that emanates only if you've used freshly roasted cumin seeds. The Sev Poori was a bit under-spiced for me (corrected by ordering fresh chopped green chillis to sprinkle over), otherwise perfectly balanced combination of sour, sweet and crunch. I finished off this late snack (they were still serving at 10:00pm on a Sunday) with the most excellent rasmalai i have had in metro Boston (2nd being Rasoi in Framingham). The cheese balls werw actually made of fresh cheese curds..the kind of "chenna" you get when you boil milk and then curdle it. Most other restaurants make the doughy version with flour which congeals & hardens really quickly, and doesn't have the fresh dairy taste. And the sauce it was presented in was ever so slightly sweetened, almost a custard. I succeeded in not licking the bowl directly and I'm going back for dinner tomorrow - will probably go for the lamb dishes. If anyone has any recommendations, let me know. :)

Thanks
