Racine Kringle Taste Test

My sister and I were wandering famished around Racine, WI, this afternoon. Lo and behold, we found two purveyors of kringles on the same strech of Washington Street. We bought a cherry kringle from Bendtsens at 3200 Washington Avenue and an almond kringle from Larsens at 3311 W. Washington. Both were good - difficult to compare because of the difference between fruit and almond.

The Larsen's has a nice, crispy-flaky texture and an aromatic crust. The thick, white icing is a little heavy though.

Bendtsen's is lighter, with a thinner, more flexible crust and a clear glaze of icing. Good cherry filling.

It's a toss-up. If I find myself in Racine again I'll pick up one of each. Alas, both purveyors use shortening these days - Larsen's using shortening and butter, Bendtsens shortening only, according to the package.
