Hello, I just thought I'd update some of you on my quick trip to Miami this week to watch my Jayhawks win the Orange Bowl- I spent a few weeks on this board trying to figure out the few spots we had time to hit.
SO- We started with Joe's takeaway for lunch- funny because we were walking and it was a lot further than we realized. I had the mahi mahi sandwich, which was messy but filling, split a crabcake that everyone in our group thought was pretty good- Very crusty, good crumbling point. Then we split some key lime pie, which I thought was the best part! I did try someone's stone crab which I'd never had before- pretty fresh, but nothing to write home about. I'm thinking we maybe would have felt differently about it if we had sat and had the dining experience. Overall: A-
Did China Grill for dinner since we're big on Asian fusion type places. We probably should have gone with more of a seafood place, but at least we tried it. Pretty terrible service. Our waiter seemed to take our order but then let everyone else do his job. One thing that bothered us was that he carded our entire table of mid- twenty-somethings when we ordered a $50+ bottle of wine and other drinks. They're not kidding when they say they bring out everything as it comes up- personally I think that they could try harder to either really stagger it or bring them out all together. There's no sense in bringing them out like two minutes apart and some of the dishes getting cold. The food- we had some sushi (can't remember the name- just cream cheese, smoked salmon) which was great. Then we split the BBQ salmon, which was fine, but something easily found. The strips of skirt steak and noodles of the day was our favorite dish, in fact we ordered more noodles later (a bowl of noodles- $21.50). Finally, the wasabi mashed potatoes were the other side we ordered and enjoyed very much. Nice kick on the end, not too much wasabi overkill. So the service and food for the price: C- Food itself for taste: B+.
Finally, since we had a day of tailgating yesterday we only had a chance to grab breakfast at the first place that came to- News Cafe. I knew it was touristy, but we were cold and just wanted to stop. I was handed a dirty glass and had to wait about 20 minutes for a new one, but the homefries, breakfast platters and everything else we ordered was good. Terrible service again, but I'd say overall it was a B.
Thanks for letting me browse your board for a few weeks- if I ever return I'll have to take some of your other recs and make more time to hit them!
