Some time ago, there were some posts on this topic and I remember several people favoring Queen of Sheba. Having long been a Meskerem partisan, I finally tried Queen of Sheba this weekend, and I still must respectfully dissent from the Queen of Sheba fans.
It's not that the food was bad. It was tasty, nice Ethiopian food, with decent kitfo (raw beef) with a spicy kick, competent doro wot, and that lentil dish with the spicy berbere sauce. The injera lived up to its purpose. If there were no other Ethiopian restaurant around, I would be quite happy with it there.
But I don't think it compares with Meskerem, which I think consistently does an amazing job. Their injera has a unique tart, sourdough quality that sets off its spicy dishes perfectly and deliciously soaks up the vinegary residue from the tim a tim salad. Its doro wot, lentil dishes, and collard greens-type things (I should know the names of these dishes, I suppose) are great. This has long been one of my favorite restaurants in New York.
Maybe it's just idiosyncratic, because it seemed like the majority of prior posters disagreed with me. For anyone interested in checking out the city's Ethiopian options, though, this is my two cents.
