Providence, RI celebration dinner-- the Gatehouse???

Has anyone been to the Gatehouse in Providence? Is it as good as its reviews? I need a nice place to go for this Thursday, and am wary of local reviews.

I would be grateful for some Chowhounders perspectives.

I have been reading around on chowhound for all Providence discussions, and haven't seen a good discussion of where to go for a nice, quiet, delicious meal, on the romantic/date/birthday/celebration.

I regularly visit Providence (from New York), and am having a LOT of trouble finding yummy restaurants -- I just don't know my way around.

So far, this is what I've tried:

Parkside. Disappointed -- dip for shrimp cocktail tasted like catchup, the fish was overdone and underflavored, though the service was wonderful.

Walter's on Atwells. Nice, but a little flashy (as opposed to intimate) for my taste. Liked the appetizers better than the entrees.

Red Fez. LOVED it as far as bar food goes and more my kind of place, though only ate in the bar upstairs. How is downstairs food? Looks a little brightly-lit and not so warm as upstairs -- thoughts?

Anyway, I'm eager to hear reviews, any and all thoughts. I'm especially partial to places within walking distance of the Brown U. area and Eastside.

Thanks!
