I love Prosperity Dumpling at 46 Eldridge St. This is one of the places in Chinatown where you can get five tasty dumplings for $1, or some tasty pan-fried sesame bread (they call it a sesame "pancake") for 50 cents (or more with fillings).
I went by there at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday (Feb. 20) and they were shuttered. Is it closing earlier now? Most of these Chinatown dumpling joints are open until at least 8 or 9 p.m. (I think). I don't get a chance to come in to the city more than once a week or so, so I wonder if they have any set hours. I hope it's not closed for good (?!). Maybe it's primarily a breakfast or lunch joint for the local populace, but before this week, the last few times I went to Prosperity at 7 or 8 p.m., the evening business seemed good. Before that, it was pretty quiet in the evenings. I had the impression that business was picking up.
Maybe they're closing earlier just on Tuesdays now? The last time I went there on a Tuesday (maybe it was Jan. 30), they closed a little early, but not THAT early. Anybody been there lately?
I had to walk a few blocks up Eldridge to the always-crowded Dumpling House at 118A Eldridge. I don't like that place quite as much, but I have to admit that they were making some pretty tasty dumplings and sesame pancakes on Tuesday night. Still not quite as good as Prosperity's, but very good. And the staff was friendlier than usual (maybe it helped that the guy in front of me wished them a happy Chinese new year... that was nice of him...). A little bit gristlier than most of the dumplings I've gotten from Prosperity though.
