problems with hand crank apple corer/peeler/slicer......can anybody help?

Last year, I bought an apple corer/peeler/slicer "machine" that you hand crank. So far, it's been a bust. No matter how often I try to make adjustments, I can't seem to get it right. It never peels the very top of the apple and heaven forbid, if the apple is a little too big, asymetrical, or the core a little soft, it poops out. Does anyone own one of these gizmos? It takes less time for me to peel, core, and slice my apples than it does with this contraption. I really thought it would save me time and wear and tear on my not so strong body, but it hasn't lived up to its potential. I keep reading the instruction manual, but I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm getting ready to give it to a rummage sale. Any thoughts? Thanks, I have some serious apple pies to make this week and the thought of peeling etc. all those apples makes me want to head for the hills.
