Powell Street Festival in Vancouver 2010: Japanese food hits the streets

I know it's come and gone for another year, but I thought I'd put up a couple of photos and thoughts in case anyone wants to catch it in 2011.

We've been going off and on for years and it's a little different every summer. Last year it was really different as it was displaced to Woodlands Park near Commercial while Oppenheimer Park got renovated. I gather there has been some internal dialogue about moving the fest away from its traditional home but it is back and as good or better than ever.

They've set a zero-waste goal and had lots of recycling receptacles and cheery volunteers guiding you in this endeavour.

But what did we eat? Takoyaki are a must at this event, despite the long lineup which I braved on behalf of the gang. Though I am normally hugely lineup averse, I had a good time chatting with others as we waited for our octopus centred spheres of dough. I understand they hired "professional" takoyaki makers this year and it did make a difference. These were some of the best I've tried, very light and savoury. Some might complain that the piece of tako is quite small but it was fine with me.

We also had the okonomiyaki and the grilled onigiri (both of which I am obsessed with). They were both very good, better than many restaurant versions I've tried. And of course we had to try the Spam sushi. Once.
