Potential Excelsior find - Mama's Cafe

Mama's has the best peanut butter cookies in the city. It was one of those moments when you take a bite and exclaim "oh my God" ... and it really is a prayer ... of thanks.

Large as a CD, crumbly texture, studded with whole peanuts, the taste is rich with butter and peanut butter.

Located at 4754 Mission accross the street from Royal Bakery and Sorrento's Deli, the official opening is August 14th. Currently it is open for training the staff and there is coffee and limited pasteries.

The Danish is above average. The bear claws are really excellent with a restrained hint of orange peel

You can buy a coffee and there are generous samples of the cookies and pastries.

One of the managers said they are still debating the menu. They will have fresh soups on the menu. The pastries are supplied by a relative who has a catering company.

They plan to have an art gallery, salsa music and jazz. The manager said he wants a place to make people comfortable wheter or not they buy.

It is a bright space with white walls and touches of lime green. A very relaxing place to have a cup of coffee. You could buy a sandwich accross the street at Sorrento and sit down and have your coffee here during this transition time. The pastries and cookies that I've tried are very good though.

There are currenly some limited salads and fresh fruit cups.

The staff really needs that training, so be patient. I understand from locals that this spot has had a number of failed restaurants.

If the food measures up to the current baked goods, I hope this place is the one that breaks the curse.
