I had dinner with some friends this past Saturday at Porter House. I was looking forward to the dinner for weeks since I had not been to the TWC and I always enjoy a great steak dinner. Unfortunately, with the exception of the beautiful space and views, as well as above average service (with the exception of failing to deliver our table any bread), the food was mostly average to forgettable.
For appetizers, we ordered the tongue salad (a little bland and tough), clams casino (okay) and the crab cake, which was pretty good, served lightly breaded with a lot of lump crab meat.
For entrees, we ordered the porterhouse for two. a strip steak and the chili rubbed rib eye. The strip steak was very good, a generous portion cooked nicely. The rib eye was also a large cut, cooked well, but it seemed to lack some of the spice you would expect. The porterhouse, however, was disappointing. It was one of the fattiest cuts of meat I have had in a long time and the meat lacked any flavor. It was cooked medium rare, as suggested by the waiter, and may have been cooked more medium. It was not tender perhaps because the meat was cut in very thick slices, at least 1-2 inches thick. I do not often have porterhouse but my last one at Blair Perrone was very tender, lean and had a lot of flavor. Maybe I caught a bad cut.
For side dishes we ordered the mac and cheese, gratin potatoes and mushrooms. The gratin potatoes were very good, the best dish of the eevening. The mac and cheese, however, was not good. It lacked any type of flavor. It was also not served that well, it was very hot on the top,but when you scopped it out you found that the rest of the it was room temperature at best. It must have been nuked. I did not try the mushrooms.
We ordered the apple brown betty and devil food cake for desset. I honestly have no recollection of either one so it was not great or bad.
The overall evening, from a non-food point, was very good because of the space and service. I would not be so quick, however, to return for the porterhouse. It was not cheap, $475 for the 4 of us, excluding tip. That did include, however, a bottle of Barbaresca ($87) and some cocktails.
