friday night my husband & i tried this spot in santa monica. it's located in a charming little white house, a space similiar to warsawa, but w/a more casual feel. we sat in the front dining room & the friendly waitress/owner(?) suggested we order combo plates so we could try more dishes. good idea. i had the curry goat(rich hunks of meat in a slightly spicy sauce) & jerk chicken(leg & thigh pieces, smoky w/ a nice sneaky heat that hits you at finish). husband had oxtails (a soft braise of melting, gelatinous meat accented w/big starchy favas) & the brown stew chicken(soft,onion-y sweet & mild). i like how the braised, bone-in dishes had those extra pockets of flavor in the body of their sauces. lots of thyme twigs & allspice berries thrown into the mix. Each combo came w/a few slices of ripe fried plantain & a mound of rice & peas(red beans), flavorful-but served a little too cold. we drank the adequately spicy ginger beer, next time will bring in red stripe. for dessert, a piece of chocolate/mocha cake-pleasant & just sweet enough. the waitress also mentioned that btwn 11am & 3pm, the side take-out area serves patties(beef or chicken encased in a pastry pocket). noticed they also have a few salads, soups & seafood dishes on the menu. overall, a nice homemade feel to the dishes we sampled, w/ layers of warm spice in the sauces & a tingly hum from the jerk. 2 entrees w/2 sodas & 1 dessert (w/tax,w/out tip)=$43
