New York Popover, a popover (what else?) restaurant just opened on 9th Ave, between 52nd and 53rd. The one notice they've received, from Time Out, says it looks like this place is trying to make popovers the next takeout trend, like frites or other single-item specialty places. I think this is a pretty accurate assesment. I'm not sure why I got this feeling, but the place seemed like it was itching to sell franchises.
Anyway, I tried a "Make Your Own" popover with chicken, jack cheese and onions, and found it to be less than satisfying. Maybe I chose the wrong ingredients, or maybe I just don't like popovers (as far as I can recall, it's the first I've ever had), but it just didn't do much for me.
I wonder if anybody else has tried a popover here and liked it. Perhaps I should have gone with a dessert variety. The berry preserves might be good.
Normally I wouldn't post to the board to announce a mediocre food experience, but it would be fun to get in on the beginning of a trend for once in my life, if for no other reason than to be able to one day say, "Popovers? They USED to be good."
