Hello Charm City Chowhounds,
I am attempting to write an essay for the City Paper about the mystifying dearth of pierogi in Baltimore, a town with a significant Eastern European population but darned few places that serve the cuisine. (Pittsburgh, a city with a similar Eastern European immigration history/demographic, has plenty of pierogi. Many restaurants serve pierogi there, and you can even buy them as bar snacks for a quarter. Here, our cheap homemade bar snacks are coddies).
So I'm asking for chowhound wisdom and guidance here to unravel the mystery. I have two main questions:
1.) Where to find pierogi in Baltimore? Either restaurant or retail? (other than Ze Mean Bean and Pikesville's Suburban House, plus not-good grocery store frozen pierogi -- Im looking for homemade.
2.) Why is pierogi not common/easy to find here in Baltimore the way it is in other places like PIttsburgh and various Ohio cities?
