As someone who generally doesn't oooh & aaah at bakeries, prefering to spend those dessert calories elsewhere, it comes as somewhat of a suprise that I am hopelessly besotted by Piedigrotta bakery.
If you've not been there, it's an amazing place. It's small, and feels as though it's been in the spot forever, yet, according to the owners, it's only been there for about 2 years. I've been going there for about a year now.
In any event, everything there is fantastic. A big selection of breads, every conceviable kind of Italian cookie, and incredible foccaccia. Last night, we got some bread there, and picked up some dessert, a "hot weather" dessert, the baker's own invention, an ice cream sandwich of sorts, but made with a "special kind of cream" in the middle of two hardish cookie things. There were about six flavors and we opted for the black cherry, chocolate, and stracitella (sp?). In any event, my friends over for dinner were impressed, and we went to the website. It turns out that the owner invented tiramasu! We tried to confirm this by doing some google seaches, and sure enough, he was working in a place in Italy that claims to have invented the dish...
Anyway, it seems that we have a culinary master in our midst....
It's definitely a place to check out, over and over again!
