Many, many thanks to all you Phoenicians who have posted about Barrio Cafe and Los Sombreros. We visited last week and were so happy! We loved them both, went twice to each and would return again and again.
At the Barrio (Phx) for lunches, we had the guacamole (perfect), tacos de cochinita pibil (flavorful and complex), tacos de pescado (light and filled with juicy fresh fish), enchilladas en black mole (as good as Oaxaca), and the torta del Barrio (as interesting a sandwich as I have ever had). The side salads were perfect balanced sweet and tart. I have to agree the bread and tapenade, although very tasty and well prepared, is a little odd flavored with the rest of the food. Service was warm, friendly and efficient, even though they were busy.
Dinners at Los Sombreros (Scottsdale) were filled with classic strong margaritas and and a variety of starters. Again guacamole (a total winner and the best chips), green corn tamal (a lovely small burst of sweetness), jicama salad (the best Mex salad), tomato salad (yummy on a hot evening), tortilla soup (large and filled with chicken, well spiced) and a garlic shrimp entree (so generous, fresh with lovely rice and beans). plus a couple more recommended treats I can't remember. I was in a margarita haze and smiling! Again the service was efficient, friendly and the staff totally accomodating.
We also tried Chayo for a meal and thought it was good, but not memorable or a place to return to.
