Went to Pho Bac (Elmhurst)this evening after a long absence and was pretty disappointed. We had a really good meal the previous night at Pho Binh(Broadway/74th) which I used to think was the lesser of the two but have now reversed that line of thinking.
The chicken lemongrass at Pho Binh was truly the very best version of the dish I've ever had . The meat was tender and succulent and there were little shredded pieces of lemongrass in the sauce which was nice and spicy. In comparison there was barely a hint of lemongrass in the portion I had tonight at Pho Bac.
Also at Pho Binh, we shared a delicious beef salad which had fresh cilantro and mint circling the mound of shredded cabbage and beef.
In comparison the beef jerky salad with green papaya at Pho Bac was dry, lifeless and tasteless.
Pho Bac's espresso w/condensed milk coffee was perfect though.
Finally, while the service at both restaurants won't win any awards, the servers at Pho Binh seemed a bit more concerned about our table than the guys at Pho Bac, which had quite a few more servers who just breezed by.
Any thoughts, fellow chowhounds?
Pho Binh has gotten better...at the very least their chicken lemongrass and beef salad were truly outstanding.
