I've been reading Diamond Dog and Elmomonster's reviews of this place for a bit so I thought I'd give it a spin.
I was expecting smaller by the previous reviews, but it wasn't terribly small at all. They had about 10 - 12 tables, it was very clean and well decorated. Perhaps they've gone through a remodel.
I grabbed a table and was greated warmly by a menu toting employee. Warm and smiling at a pho restaurant??? Hmm... something is up.
I started with garlic egg roll which were amazing. Very garlicly, very crisp and flavorful. The garlic has been cooked prior to being put into the egg roll, letting off that sweet garlic taste but not overcooked and leaning towards bitter and harsh. Man, this was good.
I didn't see a ton of seafood pho on the menu here, this was meat eater fare.
On came the ocean of pho. I had the House Special Combonation which consisted of rare beef, brisket, tripe, tendon and meat balls. At Pho 99 I decided tendon wasn't my gig but thought I'd dive in one more time. The broth was amazing, clear, not fatty and semi sweet. Great start! The meat was cooked as described, unlike some other pho places where the meat is shoe rubber, and was soft and very eatable. Meatballs had a great flavor with some sausage and perhaps veal mixed together. They were obviously made on spot and were good as well. Even the tendon was good and lacked the tough texture that Pho 99 has. The noodles were cooked perfectly and I was very happy.
This is very well worth the trip, I'd recommend it to anyone and will be back myself. The food was very good, atmosphere was good and the service very helpful and friendly. This was a hit!
Off to try a new pho place that opened up in Anaheim Hills today, details later...
