We're on our way home from a 6-week road trip from Southern California to the Great Lakes area, and wanted to mention a couple of delightful stops in Petoskey. We were in a small RV so were mostly camping and fixing our own food, however the one lunch we had at American Spoon was so good we'd have gone back for dinner if they'd been open this time of year.
For better-than-average groceries, we visited a few places that the manager/bartender at American Spoon recommended.
Bill’s Farm Market, a little bit north of town, was amazing. The amount, quality and price of fresh produce available just blew our minds - especially for early October, when most farm stands we saw had nothing but squash. We bought tasty tomatoes, snap peas, lettuce, broccoli, and, of course, apples. We'd have bought more, but our RV has a teeny refrigerator.
Plath's Meats is a store specializing in smoked meat products. It's apparently been in the same family for generations, and they have the pictures on the wall to prove it. We got some smoked pork loin which made a delicious meal stir-fried with the snap peas. We'd have gotten more, but again, tiny refrigerator.
At Bayside Market on Hwy 31 we bought Lake Trout and Walleye, and they had a good selection of wine at decent prices. Lake trout was a discovery for us on this trip, we ate it every chance we got. Wish we could get it in California.
Down the way in the same shopping center as Bayside was BreadWorks, with a huge variety of hand-kneaded, home-baked breads and pastries. We picked up a scone to share for a mid-morning snack, and a dense, rich rye which we had sliced. That made wonderful toast and sandwiches for several days. We'd have taken more if we'd had room.
