A few years ago I walked into hole in the wall restaurant in the East Broadway part of Manhattan Chinatown and saw an item on the menu which I had never seen before. It was a fairly plain concoction of wide Hong Kong style egg noodles smothered in a peanut sauce. At the time I couldn't figure out the origins, nor could anybody on the Manhattan Chowhound board. However over the past 3 or 4 years I discovered that this is actually a very common dish in Fujianese style Chinese restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn Chinatown. But while Fujianese probably have now taken Manhattan and Brooklyn Chinatowns over from the Cantonese they are pretty much nonexistent in California, and hence I hadn't expected to find that dish out here. However, stopping by what may be the only Fujianese restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley, Fu Yuan on Garvey, I see that they serve the peanut butter noodle dish. One slight difference is that they use a Taiwanese type noodle instead of a Hong Kong style egg noodle, quite understandable since the Taiwanese influence in Manhattan Chinatown is somewhere near zero. Fu Yuan is at 305 W. Garvey Ave., and for the past year and a half has been known as "Grand Opening" after they recovered from the fire that shut them down for many months. The giant Grand Opening sign was finally removed from the storefront, revealing signage saying Fu Yuan Chinese Food. This is the restaurant that has been dispensing frozen Fujianese fish balls to the community for the past 4 years or so.
