9 of us from PortlandFood.org met for dinner at Eleni's Estiatorio tonight.
I enjoyed most of the dishes. I think the restaurant is clearly better than Alexis, though still not great. It's not the Greek equivalent of, eg, Pambiche, Taqueria Nueve, or Karam. But the food (both the quality of the ingredients and execution) and the atmosphere are both better than Alexis, imo.
My biggest complaint is just that I think many of the dishes seem too similar. There's a degree to which you could say once you've had one, you've had another. "Oh, another dish sauced with tomatoes and garnished with feta."
Some of the better dishes, I thought, were the feta in filo with honey, the mussells in a slightly spicy and tangy tomato sauce, the eggplant stuffed with beef, and the calamari (both fried and grilled).
I didn't think anything was bad, some things just seemed redundant or could use a change here or there. eg, a special of lamb, tomato sauce, and feta in filo tasted better without the dense lamb-loaf than with it. The meatballs were fine, but a little basic and monotone. Even some of the good dishes could have used a little help. eg, the fried calamari were very tender, but many of the pieces had a bit of an uncooked flour taste to them.
Portions and prices were quite fair. We had 16 orders of appetizers and 5 orders of entrees. Some were doubled up for a total of 15 dishes tasted. Total for the food was $189 and I don't think anyone went hungry. I was trying to take smaller than normal portions because of my diet and I still got quite full.
