Paris Nightmare

Last month I had the worst dining experiance ever. I've been looking for a forum to vent on and just found chowhound.

I won't name the restaurant since the food was good and it wasn't the problem. It was my dining neighbor, Francois, that was the culprit.

A colleague and I spent a weekend in Paris doing the sights, eats and drink that is Paris. We secured 9:30 reservations in a one star restaurant and were having a great time until Francois the Frenchman and his American girl (later claimed to be his wife but no way) were seated next to us. With barely twelve inches seperating the tables we were forced to listen to his loud French-English degrade from a curse-a-minute to one every third word.

After three consecutive motherf***** I put down my fork and asked if he would please stop cursing. Well to my shock he had barely started. He cursed us loudly, told us to leave his country, called us ignorant, stupid Americans, MF'd us somemore and threatened to kill me for invading HIS privacy. The maitre'd moved us but ten minutes later he followed me to the bathroom where it started all over. His "wife" later came over and said that although his behavior would not be acceptable in New York of Los Angeles, it is acceptable in Paris since he learned English from movies!! What logic! She said that since I probably had never been to Europe before (I've been there 15 times since August 2000) I just didn't know how to behave in a restaurant. I guess one is supposed to accept loud cursing as standard fare and enjoy it as though it is entertainment.

In retrospect I probably should have just asked to be moved but he was really obnoxious and I couldn't take it any longer. He was even threatening her if she didn't eat what he ordered for her.

Has anyone else ever encountered something similar?

Thanks for listening.
