Well, I've now visited this latest Potrero Hill entry from the team behind Chez Papa, Chez Maman, etc. several times and do find it enjoyable, although those just seeking any decent taco or burrito may have something to say about the price. For the most part, given the quality of ingredients and the very generous portion sizes, I think it is a nice addition to the neighborhood, especially when the lines at Chez Maman are too long. Having the bar seating is nice too as its an easier place to hang out at for a glass of wine without hordes of people waiting for your seat..
Things I've especially enjoyed:
The carne asada and the duck confit tacos. The carne asada tacos were definitely a cut above, with very tender flavorful flank steak served in a generous amount of medium rare slices, with carmelized onions, radishes, early girl tomatos and avocado. The duck confit, with a tamarind salsa, was equally good (although a stingier amount of filling the afternoon I tried these). Tacos come 2 to an order and you can mix and match. $8 per order, but they are substantial-- or at least the carne asada and Baja fish tacos (comments below) -- were
The shrimp ceviche with mango -- outstanding the first time; merely good the 2nd.
Guacamole -- yes it was just Guacamole, but one of the tastiest I've had in a long time.
Wild mushroom quesadilla -- nice, and large -- enough for 2 if you ordered something else as well.
Trio of complementary salsas: red pepper, mango/chili, and cilantro crema.
Watermelon agua fresca -- very refreshing indeed.
Things that were fine, but not exceptional to my taste:
Baja fish tacos -- batter fried rock cod, chipotle remoulade, purple cabbage slaw. Well prepared -- I guess I'm just not wild about rock cod.
Braised chicken oaxacan mole enchiladas wtih crème fraiche, monterey jack cheese, pickled red onions. I really wanted to like this, but there are many different moles and this one didn't do it for me.
Tamale in coloradito salsa-- no longer on the menu.
So why a French/Mexican place? The executive chef, who is also the current Chez Papa Chef, is from Mexico City where he worked at the French Embassy.
