In my effort to bring people forward into a more full appreciation of beer, hence shattering, if you will, the myth concerning what used to be referred to as Microbrew, now with a new marketing gimmick going under the name of Craft Beer, I have an ongoing mapping effort underway, in lay terms, that is, of the destinations for good beer, in the Boroughs, most notably, Brooklyn.
I too loved the Pale Ale and the Indian Pale Ale. That was during the Microbrew Craze. As my sib would take to Duvel, and German Wheats, amongst others, I sided with Sea Dog, Brooklyn Brown, Nutfield, until.....Sierra Nevada, etc.
I was able to study the tastes of beers, in a region of the world, where the brewing tradition is as old as ...shall I quote:
"Beer was spread through Europe by Germanic and Celtic tribes as far back as 3000 BC, and it was mainly brewed on a domestic scale."-wikipedia
Thus stated, one ritual was returning from work, and too hungry to prepare food, thus digging into the huge jar of the decades old made in Brooklyn Kimchi, and cracking open a Whitbread.
British Ales are one of the most pairable beverages on earth, pairing with food that is.
It is a nice idea that one can come up with interesting, comical, even absurd names, and very funky labels. Reminds me of the Hot Sauce crazy, with all these small bottles, and interesting labels, but in the end, I am running to the shelf where all the Mexican brands are.
Craft Beer is to beer, what Thomas Moore's Soul Mates and Chicken Soup for the Soul is to philosophy and metaphysics, theology, or psychology.
Craft Beer is to beer, what regarding Guy Fieri, and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, as serious geography based on culinary culture excavation. He is simply revenue, and repetition.
Craft beer is to the human history of beer making, as astral projection is to serious physics, or academic psychology.
Expounding on ones understanding of a tapestry consisting of depth and variety within what has become commercially, as well as popularly known as Craft Beer, shows one needs expanding of the repertoire one takes to when drinking.
Again, they reinvented the market with Craft..from Micro
The only astral projection that I am aware of, is the effect that is induced after my long time friend calls all to do Jägermeister shots, at 3 am, in a Greenwich Village dive.

First off, the beer gets so interesting, as one descends from Crown Heights and Windsor Terrace towards Borough Park and just below Church and McDonald. This is where the area gets so magical with beer selections.
The closer one gets to the water in this projection, the more offerings there are, of the Eastern European types.
This is exhibited in small grocers, supermarkets, as well as ethnically coded venues for eating.
On the same token, if one sits in the drinking venues from 104 up to Lefferts on Liberty, there are mostly Caribbean Beers, which are interesting, but not in the flavor realm as beers coming from East of Germany, found south of Church and McDonald.
By the way, the new mayor, Mr. De Blasio (白思豪先生: bai si hao xianshen) drinks Birra Moretti, and why should he drink anything else (see NYT article on Bill and his eating habits in Park Slope). Identity issues do impinge upon beer, but, for those who are after tastes and flavors, one must transcend such, with allowances to return to such, when the occasions demand.
