Just back from a great weekend in Ottawa. Stayed at the Marriot Courtyard in the Byward market. We didn't want to wander to far so just went for dinner wherever our feet took us. There are many good restaurants to choose from in the market area and a lot of not so good.
We got lucky I guess as both Friday and Sat we had good food and good service for reasonable prices.
Friday we ate at Mezzanotte Bistro. http://www.mezzanotte-bistro.com/
A delightful little Italian bistro with great sauces and a very respectable wine list.
My wife and I split a pasta as an appetizer (Pasta con pancetta
) Very good and lots for two.
I had Vitello alla Campagna
Fresh Veal Scalloppine stuffed with Asiago Cheese, Prosciutto & Portobello Mushrooms over a Brandy mushroom sauce.
My wife had the fish of the day which was superb.
The service was attentive and all the food was very good.
Saturday we found a gem. We just went down the block on Dalhousie and were lucky enough to get a window table in Cafe Spiga.
This fusion of Portugese and Italian cuisine works terrific.
The service was great, they were more than helpful with the menu explanations and the wine choices worked perfectly.
I had Carne Alentejana, which was a slow cooked dish of marinated pork and clams and cubed potatoes. Wow, this was a marriage of flavours that only the Portugese can do so well. It was paired with aa wine from the same region (Tino de Anfora Alantego)Perfect! I had preceded this with Shrimp Piri-Piri. Shrimp kebab with a sauce to die for.
My wife had the seafood soup, again it was perfect and she followed with the fish of the day, which was a combination of 3 fishes in a fennel cream sauce. The fish was cooked just the way it wqas supposed to be. What more can I say. I will go back the next time I am in Ottawa. Great food and great prices.
