Last friday I stopped in San Bruno to grab a bite for dinner along San Mateo Avenue. My first stop was Ming's. I had handpulled noodles on the brain, but when my waitress said the cook who makes them didn't come in that day, I said "good-bye" and headed to Innya Lake down the street. It has been some time since my last visit here, and I've taken note of the various downhill reports. Yet, I still held out hope that the ono kauk soi (chicken coconut curry noodle soup) might have survived.
Sadly, I have to say that this was just above mediocre. The soup itself was on the bland side with little curry flavor or chicken-y intensity. The boneless chicken meat chunks were fine, but the soup based lacked that special something. The presentation with the noodles and other additions on the side was a nice touch, giving the impression that the ingredients are freshly cooked and just waiting for you to put them together at the table. Unfortunately, the boiled noodles were completely limp and the fried ones tasted of stale oil and had a tough, chewy texture. The fried onions were oil-soaked and tasted like the inside of a refrigerator. And, as the photo shows, the kitchen doesn't even know how to cook an egg properly.
So sad. What's worse is that this was still better than Green Elephant's or T-28's version.
