My fiance picked Olives for her birthday dinner, and I must admit I was a little skeptical. Much of what I had heard was true...the Saturday night crowd was overbearing...there was a long wait to be seated, even with our reservations.
However, I have to say the staff did an excellent job and the food was wonderful. I don't know if I'd call this a GREAT restaurant, but we certainly had a good time. I was very impressed with the service and the food.
We shared the squid and octopus (too chewy, but good flavor,) and the scallops as an appetizer. Followed that with the gnocchi as a pasta course, which was brilliant. For dinner she had the tuna and I had the halibut, which is crusted with a crab cake better than that at Blue Water Grill. (I say that with certainty since we lunched at BWG and I had the crab cakes there.)
If for no other reason, go to Olives for the scallop appetizer. It's served over an oxtail ravioli that is amazing. If you don't want to get into the whole dining scene, sit at the bar with a glass of red wine and have the scallops. It's definitely an appetizer portion, (two sea scallops over the ravioli,) but worthwhile. I plan on making it a regular stop on the way home...
