OC Hounds--Don't Hate Me (Clae's) (Long)

Well, it was a lovely day/evening so I decided to check out the well-spoken of Clae's in Laguna.

When we arrived, the window seats were all taken. The restaurant is very small--there is a second and third row of tables. We were seated at the third row of tables.

The restaurant is quite small and the ceiling is quite low. We sat down and reviewed the menu. I did not see the heralded "tasting menu". The average price of the entrees was a hefty $34.

Here was a first for me--each time someone walked by the floor shook as if we were on a ship! After about 5 minutes I was beginning to feel sea sick. With the severely lacking ambience, extremely high prices, and the motion sickness I was beginning to feel, we decided we could not enjoy a relaxing evening here.

Even my husband who is not "motion sensitive" said he was distracted by the entire table moving any time someone passed. He also was not interested in spending a whole wad of money in a restaurant with "Sambos decor" It does look like a converted Sambos with an ocean view, with the most expensive prices I have ever seen. By the way, the hostess said they no longer do Tasting Menus because they were "poorly received".

We will not be back--too many restaurants who have the whole package; decor/service/food. But more power to those who can endure the ambience to enjoy their supposed good food. (Take a Dramamine if you are in the third row!)

Thank God for Roy's in Newport Beach. We enjoyed a wonderful 3 Course Prix Fixe meal for only $30 each! Great service/food/ambience. I loved their Szechuan Baby Back Ribs--smokey/sweet/delicious! Of course we had great martinis and a wonderful Babcock/Roy's Cabernet/Cabernet Franc. Life is good.

When you get lemons, make lemon granita!!!!
