My husband and I went to dinner a week ago Friday night with another couple. We had a lovely table in the room with the fireplace and it was very cozy. We each started with a martini and I was pleasantly surprised to find they were all $11 no matter what Vodka we asked for (Belvedere, Grey Goose and Ketel One.) No amuse bouche which sort of surprised me but we did get warm rolls with cold butter in a little crock.
Service was very nice and not at all snooty. Waiter asked if we'd like water...plain, bubbly or tap. We went for the bubbly since he didn't push it on us.
Considering that what was recommended by this group was to bring an armored car full of cash, I was a little wary of the menu! Happily I found that
prices for the entrees are expensive but not outrageous. The salads and soups however are very expensive, IMHO. My husband and I decided to share
the "Rougies Duck Foie Gras,Candied Apple & Hazelnut, Toasted Brioche, Citric Glaze"
(everyone wanted a bite) and it was delicious. The was candied dried apple was amazing. I'd like to know how that was made. It was really good and interesting.All the flavors just really worked together in that dish. Not sure why Fois Gras is in quotes.
One friend got the "Baby Chicory Frisee, Applewood Bacon and Warm Poached Egg with Garlic Xeres Vinegar Dressing" (which is the salad I was interested in) so I had a bite and it was delicious. Still not sure it was worth $15 but that's probably just me being practical. Maybe it's harder to poach an egg than I think? Other friend got the "Pumpkin & Butternut Squash Soup, Ginger and Green Apple" which was really different and memorable. It had green apple julienned in it and had a strong cumin flavor. We all enjoyed that one! (As you can tell, we all like to share food, which at some nice places seems awkward but at Four Oaks our waiter saw what we were doing and brought extra little plates and spoons.)The soup is fairly heavy and a nice sized serving, so it was perfect for sharing.
For the main course I had the "Roasted Maine Lobster,
Broccoli Mousse, Potato Cake, Cognac-Truffle Nage" which comes already out of the shell. I think it had to have been poached in butter. It was incredibly rich and decadent and so good! I'm still thinking about it 2 weeks later. I'm trying to do the 'low-carb' thing (don't know why I bothered, with everything else I ate) so I asked for no potates. They gave me grilled zucchini & squash, that was sliced and fanned on the plate. And I didn't miss the potatoes at all!
My husband had the "Farm Raised Venison Chop, Garlic Turnip Gratin, Cinnamon Apple, Crispy Cabbage & Applewood Bacon, Reduction of Cabernet Sauvignon." It was delicious. We both love steak, and this was like a wonderfully cooked steak but with a little different flavor (not at all gamey.) I already want to go back and order that dish. Another had the "Pepper Crusted Tuna Filet, Oven Candied Tomato, Grilled Artichoke, Crispy Garlic & Spicy Mayo" which was very good also, but not as exciting as the other dishes turned out to be. I think they excel at the rich, cooked dishes.
His wife had the "Rosemary roasted Free Range Chicken Breast,Blue Cheese Gnocchi gratin, Caramelised Leeks and Red wine poached Pear" mostly because she wanted all the sides. She wasn't that excited about ordering chicken but wasn't sure what else on the menu she'd want. Well, it turned out that the chicken was really amazing. Almost like it wasn't chicken but was some other wonderful meat. We were all really glad she chose that item. And the Blue Cheese Gnocchi was amazing. Very light and fluffy, with a rich cheese sauce served in it's own little dish that had been put in the broiler so it was browned.
Profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate sauce, and an apple tart were for dessert along with espressos. The whole thing, including a bottle of wine, was about $350. So, pricey but not the most expensive meal I've had. And we definitely all enjoyed ourselves. The food was really memorable and I'm looking forward to going back for another special occasion. I'd also love to go back when the weather is warm and sit outside. I think a Sunday brunch there would be lovely.
