A Few Notes from Berea, Kentucky

I've had a wonderful two days in beautiful Berea. Although food hasn't been the highlight, I've had some decent chow:

1. The spoonbread at Boone Tavern was delicious, as advertised here, although my local friend says hers has Boone's all beat. The rest of the food was O.K. but not at all special, IMO.

2. The casual food at the Main Street Cafe a few doors down was unexpectedly terrific. The soups are homely in the best sense, studded with fresh herbs. The goat cheese salad, and sandwiches with sprightly dressings are fresh. The service is friendly (free wifi, too) and the coffee is probably better than at the coffee place a few doors down.

3. Blondie's Ice Cream at 636 Chestnut was an unexpected delight. I loved my praline and cream cone. Moderate butterfat, low on air, high on flavor, the consistency of the ice cream was my ideal.

4. I wish I could be more enthusiastic about the food at Hall's on the River, in Winchester, but the setting is lovely and the beer cheap.
