Nice Restaurants in WLA, Santa Monica area

My office wants to buy a gift certificate for dinner at a really good, pretty, trendy-ish restaurant (up to $150 for 2 for dinner) in WLA or Santa Monica/ Venice area for a woman and her SO who just moved to Palms from Oakland. What's Globe Venice like? I don't want a tourist-trap, even if it is a great place. A friend in LA told me The Hump is really good, but its website looks touristy. Any suggestions?

PS: My small claim to fame is that (when I used to live in Echo Park) I added to Langers fame in an NYT article by their then Food Critic Mimi Sheraton. She wrote some article about how LA was a "gastronomical wasteland". I got mad and wrote back about lots of good places to eat. This was in the early 80's. Last time I was there (about 3 years ago) the article was in their front window - of course missing the first page with my name on it. I claim this is why I'm not world-famous and a millionaire now.
Ms. Sheraton actually called me up and asked for the locations of several of the restaurants I'd mentioned. She then wrote about Langer's pastrami and their steamed, baked rye bread, saying they were better than she'd had in NYC in many a year. She also wrote about the Taco stand in the car wash on the corner of Sunset and Alvarado (dunno if it's still there or good). I think she also tried the albondigas at Barragans (much better years ago - not so salty).

I also told her about a place whose name I can't remember any more. It was in East LA across the street from a famous burrito place which was always packed. Anyway, that place had really great salsa with chunks of avocado in it. Anybody remember it? Is it still there?
