Lunch at Peller Estates Winery was spectacular. We purchased the $99 combination lunch and Shaw Festival theater ticket. One would think that the lunch would be skimpy and the seats not so great for this price, but that could be less true. Lunch included an appetizer and a main course, and three one-bite desserts, as well as a glass of sparkling wine. We added on the wine pairings for an additional $25/person -- well worth it (except it made staying awake during the first act of the show a bit challenging). My appetizer was a chicken "parfait" (more like a mousse) served with house-made crackers and three different spreads. Main course was three scallops served on a piece of pea-meal bacon and a shortbread with an ice-wine hollandaise. My companion had the prosciouto (sp?) salad and halibut. Service was perfect, and the room was lovely.
Dinner was at The Charles Inn. My only complaint was that the restaurant was B or B+ and the prices were A or A+ -- just not a good value. The room was appealing, but the temperature was uncomfortably warm. Service was very good. The wine list -- all Ontario wines -- was also overpriced, in my opinion. We had a Syrah that was not terribly impressive for $60 (and that was one of the cheaper bottles). My parsnip/leek/ginger soup was quite good, and at $10 not totally out of the ballpark. My duck breast was a healthy portion, but at $34, I would say a bit overpriced. My companion's beef tenderloin was competent, but not a home run, and at $38, also overpriced. Perhaps this is the going rate in NOTL, but after the fantastic lunch, we found The Charles Inn a bit of a let-down.
