We just returned from wonderful weekend in Texas. Here's what we found.
Right off the plane, we hit Papacitos for jalapeno stuffed shrimp. Grilled and yummy although not as good as I rememberd from last trip when we discovered stuffed shrimp in Houston.. Salsa and chips were good. Husband had combo plate and was happy. Service was great.
Dinner was fancier, noisier and better. Concierge at hotel recommended Manuels. They were packed and there was some confusion since, the concierge made the reservation in his name rather than ours. Food was wonderful. Enchilladas mole and crab enchilladas were a tough choice when there were so many great looking things on the menu. Salads were interesting and well prepared and we were too stuffed for dessert. Maybe next trip.
Next day was food orgy. Breakfast at Bluebonnet Cafe where we were the only ones not wearing boots. French toast and biscuits were great. And since they're known for pie, we shared a slice. Unfortunately there didn't seem to be any lemon in the lemon meringue although it was yellow. Meringue was the best part. Maybe it was God's way of telling us we didn't need pie for breakfast. But when you're on vacation, I think anything goes. Then onward across the Hill Country (which reminded us greatly of the desert in California and Arizona) with a pit stop at Coopers BBQ. Now there's something you don't see every day. BBQ at it's best, dumped on a tray then cut up and wrapped in paper. Tender, delicious and just a little too fatty, just like it's supposed to be. For dinner, we thought a couple of appetizers would be plenty. We picked Saba and had some interesting choices. Plantain wrapped shrimp on skewers, shrimp dumplings, crab cakes and calimari were all very good but not great. Perhaps people come here more for drinks and the menu is more bar food but it was fine for what we wanted.
Next day, we left Austin for Galveston which absolutely amazed us with great old buildings restored to more than their former glory. A stay at the Tremont Hotel with its 17 foot ceilings, massive windows and great service were a fine base for exploring the historic district and giving us a chance to find fresh seafood. Both lunch and dinner were wonderful, next day we were back in Houston for our flight home with a detour at Central Market so we could bring home a suitcase full of tortillas and deli meats.
Texas, you're ok. We will wear our new Horns t-shirts with pride and remember this wonderful weekend for a long, long time.
