Nasu Blanca review

I took my gf out for her birthday dinner last night, and we went to Nasu Blanca. What we had:

Eggplant with miso sauce
Seared, dry-spice rubbed loin of bigeye tuna with edamame puree
"Hiramasa" sashimi (white tuna) with ponzu sauce and jalapeno oil
White bean and Chorizo soup
Nasu Blanca Paella

The eggplant was very good -- deep fried juicy pieces of eggplant, dipped into a sweet/sour miso mix. The loin of bigeye tuna was very tasty as well, but not anything surprising. The edamame emulsion was a little underwhelming -- it was intended to cool the spice on the tuna, but it wasn't particularly tasty or cooling either in texture, flavor, or temperature. Our favorites were the white tuna sashimi and the soup. The white tuna was very rich, very fatty, and the flavor was tempered really well by the citrus/soy ponzu. I think the jalapeno note on top of that would be wonderful, but unfortunately, I couldn't taste the jalapeno at all, even when I stuck my chopsticks into the oil directly and tasted it. The white bean soup was smooth and pureed, with small chunks of chorizo in it. The soup was EXCELLENT, but the chorizo was overly salty -- as a garnish, it might have made sense to mince into smaller pieces and put less into the soup.

The texture of the paella was excellent, but the dish as a whole was a little salty for me. I can see it working, though, with a nice glass of wine. It had shredded shortribs, lobster, and scallops. The scallops were wonderful, but the lobster seemed a little lost in the dish. It might have been nice to get a little crust on the rice.

All-in-all, a very nice meal. Great service, too.
