As far as the total picture … selection, quality, ambiance … this is probably the best brunch buffet I’ve had in my life.
What is so brilliant about it is that it is the first buffet I’ve been to that I believe will please absolutely everyone … from the discriminating food aficionado whose idea of dining well is kitchens manned by top-tier chefs … to the simpler food-challenged whose idea of good eats runs to AYCE buffets such as Hometown.
The food is not over-fussy, just classic American dishes done well with top-quality local purveyors and stunning produce from the garden.
The meat and potatoes people will be happy with large delicious shrimp cocktail, juicy carved beef, smashed potatoes and a hot cobbler that was still bubbling as it was set on the counter.
The food connoisseur will be pleased with the Fatted Calf pate and cold cuts, cheeses from quality cheese makers and dishes that exhibit skill, care and thought.
Finicky kids have pizza … but the type of pizza that can be enjoyed by all levels of taste. Or there are breakfast items such as pancakes, sausages etc.
If you want to put on your designer Sunday clothes, wear jeans or, like one grandmom, sport your mumu … it’s all good.
I’ll post the menu in the first reply. But these were a few of the standouts for me.
- ROASTED BEET SALAD
I went back for … thirds. Excellent flavor and nicely mixed with wilted beet tops.
- ST AGAR BLUE CHEESE AND FIG NUT BREAD
That cheese was at the perfect stage of ripeness and the fig bread had a background taste of some spice, maybe cardamom. Very nice with candied walnuts and dried figs. Surprisingly the Marin French cheese triple crème was great.
- CREAM PUFF CHOUX PASTRY FILLED WITH EGG SALAD
- QUINOA SALAD WITH PARSLEY & MINT
I usually dislike these types of salads which are often tasteless and on the oily side. This was light, tasty and the fresh mint just popped with flavor
- MOIST ZUCCHINI BREAD
- FABULOUS … FABULOUS CARVED BEEF FILET WITH GARDEN THYME JUS
- HOT BUBBLY BLACKBERRY COBBLER
- VANILLA CUPCAKES … .CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES
Early on I had some cupcakes at Brix and I was less than impressed always posting while I love, love, love the baked goods at Brix, this was the one exception. I take that back.
This is the clever part of the baked goods … they capture the soul and taste of America.. The chocolate cupcakes were like the best devil’s food cake. The vanilla … Twinkies … if Twinkies were made with quality ingredients.
- SHORTBREAD COOKIES WITH LEMON CURD OR CITRUS CREAM FILLING.
It didn’t hurt that they serve Graffeo dark roast coffee which still remains my all time favorite.
Sitting on the trellis-shaded patio Sunday and enjoying the bountiful, gorgeous garden at the height of summer while in the distance the wine train slowly passed through, just enhanced the meal.
Children played on the green lawn, families wandered through the garden after brunch and one couple took their doggie for a walk
I lingered a bit in the parking lot looking at the fat bunches of deep purple grapes lazily hanging on the vines and soaking up the sun like the last vacationers before summer ends and they get back to the business of becoming wine. I wonder if the taste of glorious summer days will be in those bottles.
