I've been hearing about Bistro 21 off and on from friends. Last year, tried to get a reservation, but they were closed down for rennovations. When it occurred to me to try and go back recently, I couldn't find it listed anymore!
Finally, I found out it is now renamed KIKUCHI located at 846 N. La Cienega just north of Melrose.
For those of you who are like me, don't put off your visit to this gem any longer. The tiny restuarant is run by a husband and wife team - no other staff.
I was so impressed with the perfect meal, I just had to share the "omakase" I had on Thursday night:
First course: Lobster flan perfectly smooth steamed custard with generous amounts of fresh lobster. Perfectly steamed asparagus with a dijon vinegrette on the side.
Second course: A kelp consomme with roasted pheasant, shittake, and fois grois....THIS ROCKED MY WORLD! The soup was so delicate and floral - never had anything like it before.
Third course: Perfectly seared grouper. Perfect, divine.
Fourth course: Pork tenderloins with a tiny serving of braised pig's feet. I'm not a hoof kind of person, but it completely opened my eyes to how elegant and delicious it could be.
Fifth course: dessert sampler(flourless chocolate cake, panna cotta, apple torte....AND MUSHROOM ICE CREAM!!! Sounded weird, but amazingly delicious and unique. Has anyone else ever heard of such a thing? (and if so, where else can I get it beside Kikuchi? I'm hooked)
Kikuchi is the best meal I've had all year. Hope you guys enjoy too!
And don't forget to give me the 411 on the mushroom ice cream!!!
