So I was sipping my coffee this AM while I read an article in the SJ Mercury about mushroom foraging. Linked article below, although seems like only part of the print version.
Got really excited about the of idea bypassing market 'shrooms in a quest to find my own in the damp SC woods. Given that the article mentioned a 70 y.o. Bay Area woman who died as a result of eating a poisonous 'shroom on Thanksgiving (really tragic) and several of her dining companions just making it out of the hospital, I am quite aware of the risks involved. Probably would just stick w/ chanterelles and the like, which are instantly recognizable (and out-of-this-world delicious when freshly plucked and sauteed in butter).
Does anyone know of places in the area where it is legal to forage for 'shrooms and/or how to get in contact w/ expert foragers who lead group expeditions?? This would be the ultimate fall adventure!!
