Milwaukee Report: Smokefree Serbian, Custard, & Other Delights

Oh, we had a lovely, chowish time in Milwaukee last weekend!

The Three Brothers Serbian restaurant, I'm thrilled to report, is all non-smoking (a good thing, too, because the place is tiny). We had a fabulous meal. The spinach & cheese burek was even better than reported, and the roast duck dinner was delicious. The chevapcici (ordered for nostalgia's sake) was nice, but I would order something else next time. More burek, probably.

We loved Leon's and Oscar's custard. Bella's Fat Cat, however, was not very good; I wish we'd gone somewhere else that night, rather than settling for the first place we saw.

And we found lots of other good smoke-free eats in MKE-land, thanks to helpful information from www.smokefreedining.net and the MKE paper.

Ardor Pub - We went for a late Friday Fish Fry. They were out of bluegill, but the walleye was very nice (but the fries and my husband's caesar were only so-so). I enjoyed the smoke-free bar ambiance, but would have liked the option of patio dining; unfortunately, they allow smoking outdoors.

Farmer's Market - The tip to go here for breakfast was a good one. We wandered and munched for an hour or two. The best thing we ate was an apple-cider doughnut from the outdoor apple stand.

Roots for Sunday Brunch - Nice place, good food. I had Cheddar & Jalapeno Biscuits with andouille sausage gravy (yum!); hubby had a tasty grilled chicken sandwich with tapenade. The Black Pepper Sorbet was pretty, but was frozen too hard to eat (they should put a stick in it and call it a popsicle).

Bombay Sweets - I loved this all-vegetarian place! Everything we ordered was great. We had samosas, utappam (a pancake with fried potatoes, coconut chutney, and lentil sauce), vegetable biryani, and curried chickpeas. This was WAY too much food, but the leftovers were great for breakfast the next day.

Cubanita's - We had a great Cuban sandwich and fabulous garlic chicken (pollo tropical) with black beans. They allow smoking, so we planned to get take-out, but to my delight, no-one was smoking on a rainy Monday afternoon. It's probably pretty nasty when someone is smoking (it's a small place and they sell cigars at the bar).

We were sorry to miss Speed Queen, Jake's, Polonez, Lixx, Moceans, and all the little taquerias I spotted on the SW side of town, but there was only so much food we could eat! Next time, for sure.
