Last night my family of five had a very nice dinner at Mignon in Plano. The food was great, the service was great, and we had the whole patio to ourselves which when you dine with 3 small children it's always nice to not worry about them bothering other diners.
Things were going along swimmingly until we got the bill. The server had tacked on an automatic 20 percent service charge. Apparently Mignon charges 20% on all tables of five or more. It's on their website (which I checked when I got home) but I don't recall seeing it on the menu. I'm sure it's there but I didn't see it.
So here's my issue: While there were 5 of us there, only 4 of us ordered and ate. My five-year-old had nothing. He just hung out and fed the ducks. So technically they could charge the 20% but realistically they shouldn't have. Now mind you, we would have tipped twenty percent anyway because our server was good but it really was off-putting to see that automatic charge there! Am I wrong? We've had several good meals there and have gone to the bar for drinks many times but I really don't feel like patronizing Mignon anymore. It just smacks of desperation.
