Merlion Restaurant-- Chapel Hill

Sorry we won't be joining the other Triangle chowhounds for the excursion to Merlion but it was mywife's birthday and that's where she wanted to go this weekend. My how much Southern Village has changed since we lived there nine years ago! The atmoshere was upscale without being stuffy, the large windows affording beautiful views of the sunset. The service is inconsisten. Our service was just okay, but I noticed other tables had service that was more attentive. We had fried dumplings and fishballs in and onion broth for appetizers, and chicken in green curry and "golden shrimp," which was marinated shrimp with a cereal coating. Everything but the shrimp was outstanding. The shrimp dish wasn't bad but gimmicky in retrospect and not worth the price. The other inconsistency was the price. The appetizers were a value while some of the entrees seemed high. For comparison, the green curry chicken and the golden shrimp are $2-4 higher than what you'd pay for at Thai Palace.

Will we return, yes. However, I'm not sure when with Thai Palace, Jujubi also in town-- and I have yet to try Lantern. Picking between the four will be one tough decision.
