Menagerie- steak w/blue cheese risotta | Apr 2, 2005 09:12 AM

Menagerie is a quaint Chef owned storefront restaurant on Belmont providing an anchor restaurant serving the Bailiwick theatre crowd across the street.

The service was consistently friendly and attentive and the food was outstanding. They offer a tapas taster of the various items on the menu (also see cafe de luca on Damen for their tapas tasters) which is a great way to learn your favorites.

However, I knew I wanted the juicy steak w/zesty red wine sauce and blue cheese risotto- and was very impressed. The steak was served on the rarer side of my order, but they sliced the tender filet to allow for the tangy/buttery red wine sauce to permeate the meat and mix with the decadently creamy/cheesy risotto. I was in a trance, my converstation ceased as I focussed on the flavors. Later emerging from that spell, I ordered a side of the tuna sushi tempura, which is called something elusive like tempura fish and chips, which was delicious and creative, but not spell-binding. Maybe if that was served piping hot, instead of room temperature I would have liked it more. Still worth a shot!

Overall: A great place, but won't make my Hidden Gem's list due to cost/value ratios. At their prices, they are expected to be good.
