Stopped by Mei Lai Wah today for a late breakfast/snack. I had been before to get pork buns to go but today was the first time I sat in a booth and took it all in. It's a must visit not just for the fresh roast pork buns (steamed, baked, etc.)and good coffee (served from a 40+ year old percolator) but also for the quiet bustle and rhythm of the place. Sitting there and watching a 70 year old man carry tray after tray of different buns over his head, going to the counter to get another coffee and having the staff insist on bringing it to your table, marvelling at the menu whose prices seem to have resisted inflation or the unchanged 60's decor...I tried to pay at the counter but a guy who hadn't served us a single thing came over to our table, quickly surveyed a mess of stacked up plates and cups and came out with our exact total. and that total was: $5.75 for 5 buns and 3 coffees.
