I dragged my Cantonese-speaking boyfriend to Mei Lai Wah to find out when the place would be closing. After a 5-minute discussion with one of the men my boyfriend turns to me and says simply "They're not closing," and then tucks into a pork bun.
Turns out they were going to close because rent there has tripled since the last lease. But they worked out a deal with the landlord so they are going to stay open. Happy news!
The unhappy side is that, according to the man at Mei Wai Lah, a lot of smaller Chinatown joints are having trouble with the skyrocketing rent and their futures are uncertain...not that this is shocking news, but still very sad nonetheless...
