Just back from Paris and wanted to report the best meal we had in Paris was Les Papilles on 30 Gay-Lussac three blocks from Jardins Luxembourg (01 43 25 20 79). Most unusual place with about 15 tables and wall cases full of wine bottles. You pick out your wine bottle which is at a wine store price and they add 6 euros to the price for your dinner. The menu is three courses and there are no options-it is pre fixe and changes daily.
Marvelous food. Entre was a leak and vegetable soup served out of huge terrine. Followed by roasted chicken served out of skillet brought to the table and finishing with wonderful chocolate pie and sorbet dessert. Prix fix is around 30 euros plus wine per person.
I have eaten at much fancier and more expensive restaurants in Paris but nothing can compare to the quality and value of Les Papilles. The compromise is you must eat what is the particular day's lunch or dinner pre-fixe. I suggest you make reservations; then on the day you are planning to eat; call the restaurant and see what they are serving. You won't be disappointed. Service, ambience are excellent.
Other excellent lunches and dinners in Paris were at: Point Bar in the 2nd, Mon Vieil Ami in the 4th, L'Avant Gout in the 13th, Chez Janou in the 3rd.
