Was in Port Chester today with a group that converges in Port Chester once a year. Usually, we have dinner at Two Moons, but a call to the restaurant yielded a recording announcing that the restaurant is no more. I have to admit that I wasn't as fond of their fancy southwestern cuisine as my friends, but I'm definitely in the minority -- it will be missed by many.
I believe it was Stephen Kaye who first recommended Tony May's Osteria, located on Regent St. It now seems to be called Mazzei's, but the feel and the food seems to be of an equal level. This isn't a world-class restaurant, by any means, and it isn't cheap. But unlike so many upscale Italian places in the Tri-State area, Mazzei's knows when to keep it simple. Their bread (and the olive oil that accompanies it) is excellent; the simple pasta dishes are light and not oversauced. The grilled baby octopus appetizer is refreshing, and the simple grilled fish was terrific.
Best of all is the service, which is friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. The entire staff was delightful and seemed to be having a great time. And we did, too.
