Maya in SF report

Ace | Dec 28, 2005 04:20 PM

I went with 3 companions to Maya at Harrison/2nd for an upscale Mexican lunch today. I was pleasantly surprised.

We ate tortilla chips and guacamole (good fresh chips, nothing special about the guac, but nicely spicy), vegetarian sopes (these were delicious- topped with corn and other veggies, really special). Our entrees included the Torta Pollo, quesadilla, tuna quesadilla, and chicken mole. I had the Torta. The chicken was succulent, sandwiched between housemade foccacia, nice sauce and vegetables on the sandwich. On the side were deliciously spiced potatoes and coleslaw. Everyone else cleaned their plates and pronounced that their food was very good.

We shared mango and strawberry sorbet (ok, stole it from the friend who got dessert), which was some of the best I've ever had. I'm not a sorbet fan, but this could convert me.

Total bill including 4 soft drinks was $90. They have a lunch "prix fixe" deal where you can pick an appetizer, an entree, a drink, and sorbet for $19.95.

Anyway, as far as upscale Mexican goes, I like this place much more than Dona Tomas (which is 3 blocks from my house, but I've never really enjoyed DT much- maybe because I don't eat red meat- I know their carnitas are supposed to be good). Service was a tiny bit weird, but acceptably quick and efficient.
