just tried this joint, right next door to the upscale matteo's restaurant. i think the more casual joint i went to has been open for close to 20 years now, but i never really noticed it.
tried the meatball sub per chowhound posts, it was all right, but great, maybe not. it was a big portion though almost as big as the portion at al gelato and for a few dollars cheaper. i think a better meatball sub can be gotten at pina's bistro in tustin along with their great tiramisu. also, al gelato has a more pungent flavoring zing to it than matteo's hoboken. but the hoboken version is quite filling, that'll hold you over for the majority of the day. so it is not light at all or fluffy. is there anywhere that serves delicious almost fluffy meatball sandwiches. oh, and matteo's does have a lot of hoboken memoribillia along the walls if you care for that.
prices are reasonable too, about 7 bucks for a meatball sub as opposed to close to 11 at al gelato and close to 9 or so at pina's. laslty, i've tried eastside deli's version before and liked that one too.
