Going through the board, I noticed that the mixed reviews of Marigny Brasserie from earlier posts were in line with my experiences there in the past - a great space but mediocre food, uninspired menu & uninformed staff (I once had an unfamiliar desert described as 'like Strawberry Shortcake' - it was basically bread pudding with, err, strawberries. yuk).
What a change since Bingo Starr has taken over! A very creative & original menu (there was nothing on it that raised the slightest skepticism in my mind - I would relish trying everything on it). The staff were funny, polite, thoughtful and attentive.
The food itself was exceptional - my partner and I cleaned our plates - both appetizer and entree. My appetizer was the duck confit - delicious and could have been served as an entree (it was so large). It was accompanied by a small cake of boudin & foie gras, set on a little bed of greens (which were smoky and delicious - not the usual bitter Southern version). A tiny quail egg topped the whole affair.
My entree was lightly fried red-snapper on a risotto, also delicious. Golden, lightly crispy & flaky. I never expect much from restaurant risotto - but I was thrilled that it was tender, creamy and very flavorful (not warmed over glop).
It was an outstanding dinner & experience. We'll be back, and soon. I'd say give Marigny Brassierie another try if you find yourself out that way.
