I know that the more popular version of this soup is the potato soup with clam seasoning, but, being of Mediterranean heritage myself, I am a bit more Manhattan Clam than cream of potato with clam seasoning. My 3 month stint in Boston and the surrounding areas 20 years ago really put me off to that thick white potato soup. And yet, I still order it every now and again...
That said, I want to believe that the reason why most may not like Manhattan Clam Chowder is the awful versions out there. What with the addition of carrots (carrots???) and lack of thyme, that really isn't clam chowder and the ubiquitous diner vegetable soup of sorts that "if you find a clam in it, you win a prize!" the prize being the clam you might find...
We do know Bigelows in RVC makes Manhattan Clam Chowder, but the addition of carrots (carrots???) and no thyme makes it less popular with everyone looking for flour thickened potato soup with clam seasoning.
Where, if any place at all, on Long Island may we find true Manhattan Clam Chowder, sans carrots and with thyme as a seasoning?
