Mama Mia's Trattoria

OK, I've been there a few times now and I can honestly say that place is consisently very good to great. And that goes for food and service. This is the best red sauce (or "east coast") Italian around that I have found...and I'm really picky about it.

The veal dishes are always amazing and they will always sub veggies (even their fabulous spinach) for the pasta. They bring you a steak knife, but you don't even need your butter knife - you can cut their veal with a fork...as it should be. My dining companions have loved their pasta, sandwiches, chicken dishes, etc. every single time...two have insisted on returning within two weeks of eating there.

Last night I needed some comfort food and I ordered the veal parmigiana. Seems the kitchen fired up an order of chicken parm...and the server realized it after picking up and serving my dining companion's entree. She came out and told me what happened, said it would take maybe 2 minutes for my veal to be ready and offered me a drink or glass of wine (of MY choice) from the bar gratis. My yummy local nebbiolo/pinot noir/cab blend (no finish, little tannin, but very nice flavors) arrived and my veal arrived about a minute later. They perfectly handled the situation...and I don't find this a lot.

Another thing is that the last two times I finally got to try some dessert there. The tartufo is decadent and chocolatey and very yummy. Wait for it to thaw a bit first and you will be rewarded. Last night we shared a piece of amaretto cheesecake which was light and creamy and had a good (but not overpowering) amaretto flavor and was on a nice puddle of caramel sauce. Also, they split a large piece of it onto two separate plates when we said we would share, and that was a nice touch...and meant more caramel sauce for us overall...mmmm...

Lisa Schroeder runs a heckuva restaurant on each of those corners on SW 2nd(she owns Mother's too). We PDX'ers are lucky folks for it. You go, Philly grrl!! ;o)
